Eames Knockoff

Refinish and Reupholster

I rescued this fake Eames Lounge out of a garage in Orange County.

Disassembly was fairly easy, the whole thing is held together with Philips head screws.

I used a electric sander to strip the old stain and discovered that the beautiful wood was actually a very thin veneer, and it didn’t take much to accidentally sand right through it.

I reupholstered with some blue vinyl and even made my own piping.  Attaching the buttons was the most challenging part.  Pulling the buttons tight enough to cause the cushion to pucker also caused the buttons to explode an fly across the room.  It wasn’t until years later that I learned that you’re supposed to put the buttons on first, then attach the upholstery to the frame and cushion.

In the end I was very happy with the results.
